The gate design is only one part of an electric gate installation.


Before fabrication begins, you need to know whether the gate can move safely, whether the driveway has enough space, where the electricity will come from and how residents, visitors and delivery drivers will enter.


London properties often make these decisions more complicated.


A narrow driveway in Chelsea may not have room for conventional swing gates. A sloping entrance in Hampstead may require a sliding or bi-fold system. A listed property in Kensington may also need planning or listed-building consent before work begins.

Here are eight things to check before ordering electric gates for your London property.


1. Choose the right gate movement for the driveway


The first decision is whether the entrance needs swing, sliding, cantilever or bi-fold gates.


Do not choose based on appearance alone. The gate must suit the available space, ground levels, traffic and surrounding boundary.


Swing gates


Swing gates open using one or two hinged leaves.


They can work well where the driveway has enough depth for the leaves to move without striking vehicles, walls or people.
